History of the creation of the SD Shortboard by Rusty- Glanz in the new surfboard shape!
The origins of "The SD" are documented in detail. In June 2016, Rusty delivered a surfboard to Stab for one of their Shapers series ("Stab in the Dark"), which was to be filmed later that summer in South Africa. Initially, it wasn't clear which pro would use the board - it was 6'0 tall and designed for a surfer weighing 190 lbs. Maybe for Jordy? But he was a little taller.
As a result, I built a modified version of the "Yes Thanks", one of Josh Kerr's models, specifically #46. The "Yes Thanks" was slightly inflated, the thickness flow and the centre of gravity were moved forward. This created a fairly deep single concave, which went to zero under the rear fin and ended with a slight V in the tail.
The mysterious surfer turned out to be Dane Reynolds. "It felt completely different to any other shortboard I've surfed before," Dane remarked. "It has a low rocker, hard edges and a squat deck. I wasn't particularly excited to try it out because of the huge snakeskin tape along the rail and that shapeless tail. It just doesn't look that cool. But I was surprised. It had a lot of speed and drive. It felt like a good board. I got a few barrels, but I couldn't make a proper turn."
It turned out that Rusty wasn't the only one experiencing a little identity confusion. Dane actually thought the board was a Creed McTaggart model moulded by Hayden Cox. Dane surfed the board with solid authority.... he rocked it. A few months later, my son Clint christened it the SD and tweaked it a bit. He added a bit of rocker. It's been one of our favourite designs for the last 5 years.

ACT SURFBOARD TECHNOLOGY
Rusty's ACT construction typically offers strength, lightweight and value for money - three crucial factors that are often seen as a compromise. The Rusty ACT shortboard features three layers of fibre on the deck and a 6oz rail tape in the tail. On the bottom is a 6oz + 4oz lay-up, complemented by UD carbon strips on the top and bottom. Interestingly, despite this structure, the weight remains comparable to a lightly glazed PU board.
However, the standout feature is the impressive responsiveness of these boards. The feeling when surfing with these boards is unique as they are extremely responsive. The unrestricted flex and low weight ensure that all the energy you transfer through your foot movements is directly translated into the turn without the "dampening" effect of the resin.
TEC - TORQ EPOXY COMPOSITE SURFBOARD TECHNOLOGY
Torq Epoxy Composite offers performance shapes in our modern epoxy lamination. These boards offer the best balance between lightness and durability. Our unique lamination process allows us to use a very strong 6oz and 4oz fibreglass layup in a 3-ply topsheet and 2-ply base (with a 4-ply rail overlap) with a high density EPS foam and still achieve a board weight comparable to a lighter fibreglass layup.
The result is a light but very stable board with good flexing characteristics and, as with all Torq boards, excellent value for money.
The TEC shortboards have 2 full layers of fibreglass over the deck and bottom. On the deck we also use a 6oz deck patch which provides a triple layer of protection against dents but does not affect the flex along the rail. The addition of a carbon filament stringer and UD carbon twin layers on the base makes these boards extra bouncy and responsive.
