Polyester surfboards have a core of polyurethane foam or PU with a wooden stringer in the middle. This core is covered with glass fibre impregnated with polyester resin.

Polyurethane (PU foam) with polyester resin has been used in surfboards since the 1950s, making it the oldest of the modern designs. Many handmade boards are made of PU because it is a brittle material that can be easily shaped by hand with sandpaper, which shortens the construction time. Both handmade and machine-made PU surfboards are generally cheaper than other foam materials. Some disadvantages are the toxicity of the material, that it is not recyclable and that the PU foam is more flexible than some alternatives, which makes the board less stiff, allowing it to bend and twist more during use. PU foam can also absorb water and yellow with time. PU is still often used in surfboard construction today.

Boards made of polyurethane (PU)
Surfboards are traditionally made of polyurethane foam, and it is still a popular construction. They are reinforced with one or more stringers in the middle of the board. The foam is formed into a "blank" in the rough shape of a surfboard. Once the blanks are produced, they are handed over to the shapers. The shapers then cut, plane and sand the board according to his ideas. Finally, the board is covered with one or more layers of fibreglass and resin.

Although foam boards are usually shaped by hand, the use of machines to shape them is becoming increasingly popular. Vacuum forming and modern sandwich construction techniques, which have been copied from other industries, have also gained acceptance.
